Abstract

We showed that Rhizobium has many systems of Fe transport, several resembling those found hitherto in pathogens. Transcription of uptake genes occurs only in low-Fe conditions, but the control system(s) differ markedly from E. coli. The Fur regulator is not involved, but two genes, girA and uirA, regulate at least 8 Fe-responsive promoters. Using proteomics and genetics, we will compile an audit of Fe-repressed genes. We will analyse the role of GirA and UirA in the Fe-regulon(s) exploiting the Rhizobium genomic sequence soon to be available. In collaborations, we will analyse corresponding regulators in Brucella and Paracoccus to demonstrate the ubiquity of these new control systems.
