Abstract

Genes which have been identified as differentially expressed during and immediately after the determination of sex in the dioecious plant Rumex acetosa (e.g. an SET-domain protein which may be involved in the control of differentiation) will be assessed according to their expression patterns and function (in transgenic R acetosa and Arabidopsis). A further cDNA-AFLP analysis will be carried out with the aim of identifying additional genes involved in sex determination and PCD. These will be characterised by sequence and expression analysis and function in transgenic plants. These experiments will enable an overview to be established of the genes which are involved in the determination of sex and programmed cell death and will provide tools for a subsequent and more detailed investigation into the molecular control of these processes.
