Abstract
Our cloning of the MSI gene represents a major landmark in the study of male sporogenesis, since MSI is the first transcription factor that is specific to anther and pollen development. MSI can therefore be used as a unique tool to investigate the molecular mechanisms of anther and pollen development. This proposal aims to conduct a functional analysis of the role of MSI and determine the genes and proteins that it interacts with. Interacting factors will be identified using yeast 2-hybrid and microarray screens. Arabidopsis functional genomic resources and our additional ms mutant lines will be used to determine functionality of the identified genes and proteins. This will establish a database of genes functional during anther development. As such this study will provide unique insight into the molecular genetic processes occurring during anther and pollen biogenesis.
