Abstract

This project seeks to apply metabolic engineering to improve the production of bioactive compounds in model streptomyces that are used in industry as hosts for the production of novel metabolites. We have identified two distinct mechanisms for increasing antibiotic yield in fermentations of Streptomyces lividans. We wish to determine whether these alterations are additive when used in combination. The effects of these and other genetic modifications will be assessed using Metabolic Flux and Elementary Modes Analyses. Information derived from the Streptomyces coelicolor genome sequence and its functional analysis will identify additional targets for manipulation that should further enhance the efficiency of bioactive molecule production.
