Abstract

We have identified a closely related group of 4 genes in Arabidopsis encoding UDP glucosyltransferases (UGTs) capable of forming the glucose ester of sinapic acid, sinapoylglucose. This ester is the terminal intermediate in the formation of sinapoylmalate, potentially a UV protectant and sinapoylcholine (sinapine), produced during seed development as a storage metabolite. Transgenic Arabidopsis overexpressing the UGTs are available as well as knockout lines for 3 of the 4 genes. The aim of the study is to undertake a functional analysis of the 4 genes in relation to sinapate metabolism in the plant. This will involve expression analyses and metabolite profiling which in turn will provide the basis for evaluating sinapoylmalate and other phenylpropanoid metabolites in resistance to UV damage as well as the basis for designing novel methods of reducing sinapine in oilseeds.
