Abstract
We have identified a new Arabidopsis mutant (hic) which produces an increased number of stomata (rather than the normal decrease) in response to growth at elevated CO2. We have cloned hic and it encodes an enzyme involved in the synthesis of very long chain fatty acids. We shall investigate what other genes are involved in the signalling pathway linking CO2 perception with the control of stomatal numbers, determine whether other environmental stimuli operate via this signalling pathway and with Drs Dobson and Shepherd at SCRI characterise the chemical nature of the hic phenotype. With Dr Schuch from Astra-Zeneca, we shall use microarray technology to identify other genes whose expression is altered in response to elevated CO2. (Joint with grant 50/P14506.)
