Abstract

Genetic analysis and molecular cloning in the model plant, Arabidopsis, have led to the isolation and structural characterisation of two disease resistance signalling genes, EDS1 and PAD4. Both encode lipase-like proteins that interact specifically in a yeast two-hybrid assay. In the plant they are genetically linked in the same pathway, operating upstream of salicylic acid-mediated defences. The aim of this project is to examine the expression, localisation, and interactions of the EDS1 and PAD4 proteins in healthy and pathogen- challenged plant cells. The molecular tools developed in this analysis will also be used to isolate and signature further interacting components of this pathway using proteomic technologies.
