Abstract
Cell volume and control of ion channels are intimately related in plants, but little is known of the mechanisms involved. We recently identified novel t- SNARES from tobacco and Arabidopsis that contribute to ABA signalling and guard cell ion channel control and now have evidence that the t-SNAREs are needed for vesicle (and protein) traffic to the plasma membrane. Control of K+ channel activity may be mediated by insertion/removal of channel proteins or a direct, regulatory effect of the t-SNARE. Funds are requested to examine each of these possible mechanisms for channel control as a key step to understanding the functional coupling between ion channel regulation and vesicle traffic in a model plant cell.
