Abstract

Light is a significant cause of stress in plants that can result in photoinhibition and photooxidative damage, impairing plant productivity. In this project the potential for increasing the tolerance of crop plants to such stress by genetic manipulation of the xanthophyll cycle will be explored. The level of zeaxanthin will be increased by transformation of Arabidopsis thaliana with the crtI and Z genes of Erwinia, and the gene encoding violaxanthin de-epoxidase. Alterations in the carotenoid composition will be correlated with physiological studies at the whole plant level by determining the effects of these transformations on photosynthetic efficiency, nonphotochemical energy dissipation and tolerance to environmental stresses.
