Abstract
We have identified for the first time, Arabidopsis gene sequences encoding two functional glycosyl transferase enzymes with high specificity towards monolignols. Aims include: (1) detailed biochemical characterisation of the enzymes; (2) exploration of cell- and tissue- specificity of expression of these GTases, and the developmental and wound stress-related regulation of their expression; (3) manipulation of levels of enzyme activity in the plant; and (4) analysis of the effects of these changed activities on: (5) profile of lignin biosynthesis intermediates and related phenolics and profiles of genes encoding enzymes in the phenyl propanoid pathways; and (6) lignin composition and cell wall properties.
