Abstract

The cereal leaf is a multi-tissue organ which fixes carbon in photosynthesis and exports sucrose to the phloem. We have already shown how different cell types have specialised roles in leaf carbohydrate metabolism. Now we shall measure the transcriptional basis of these differences by extracting from individual cells and tissues specific mRNA for enzymes in photosynthesis, sucrose and fructan metabolism, and starch metabolism. This will be done under conditions of low and high carbon flux rate and of high and low accumulation of sucrose and fructans. We shall determine dose-response curves and time courses for different control elements of the signal transduction pathway.
