Abstract
Approximately 30,000 partial cDNA sequences (ESTs) will be determined from a cDNA library derived from the moss Physcomitrella patens. This organism is the only plant species for which gene disruption by homologous recombination has been demonstrated to occur with high efficiency. Because moss genes have been found to have significant homologies with higher plant genes, this collection will allow rapid movement from sequences obtained in Arabidopsis and crop species for sophisticated analysis of gene function in moss. In addition to providing the EST collection as a resource to the plant science community, we shall provide training and/or collaboration in moss transformation and in phenotypic and molecular screening.
