Abstract

The overall aim of the project is to investigate a novel class of protein translocase with a unique operating mechanism. Recent work by the applicant (with collaborators at UEA) has identified a core component, termed TatC, of a tactical Sec-independent protein export system that apparently functions in the transport of fully-folded proteins. We now have clear evidence that plant mitochondria contain a related system which includes TatC but which otherwise differs in key respects. We propose to determine the substrate specificity of this translocase and to analyse its structure and mechanism.
