Abstract

Bacterial adherence to specific host tissue is mediated by fimbrial and afimbrial adhesins. Many pathogenic E. coli isolates have the capacity to produce a spectrum of adhesins, but these are rarely produced at the same time. Cross-regulation between adhesin gene clusters will be characterised at the single cell level using fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) and fractionation techniques. How changes in environmental conditions impact on this regulation will also be addressed. In identified cases, genetic and biochemical approaches will be taken to understand mechanisms of cross-talk between adhesin gene clusters.
