Abstract

SFR2 is a novel gene that is essential to freezing tolerance in the plant species Arabidopsis thaliana. The proposed research has the aims of understanding the function of this gene, and of enabling its manipulation for both experimental and applied purposes. The SFR2 gene will be identified in cloned genomic DNA by complementation of the sfr2-1 mutation in transformed plant lines. We will determine the nucleotide sequences of the wild-type SFR2 gene, the mutant sfr2-1 allele, and the wild-type transcript.
