Abstract
Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the perception of environmental signals is a major goal of plant biology. Light signals play a crucial role in the regulation of plant development. Of particular importance to plant architecture and performance is the phytochrome B, D and E-mediated perception of FR-rich reflected light signals and initiation of the shade avoidance syndrome of responses. As part of a programme focused on understanding and manipulating shade avoidance, we have recently isolated a recessive Arabidopsis mutant designated sas1, for shade avoidance suppressed. The sas1 mutation 'suppresses' the elongated, early flowering phenotype caused by phyB-deficiency and renders the plant insensitive to low R:FR signals. It is proposed to isolate SAS1 and to establish the precise function of this important regulator of light signalling.
