Abstract
The overall aim of this research is to understand how proteins are translocated across biological membranes. Recent work by the applicants has helped define a new class of protein translocase that is widely distributed in the membranes of bacteria and chloroplasts. In mechanistic terms, this type of protein translocase is totally unique among known protein translocators, and the project will investigate in detail the structure, expression and mechanism of action of the system in Escherichia coli.
