Abstract
Early events in Avr9/Cf9-mediated disease resistance are thought to include Ca2+ influx and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Cf9-containing tobacco cultures retain these characteristics, including the requirement for external Ca2+, and respond to Avr9 elicitation with rapid alterations in K+ and anion channel activities consistent with Ca2+ dependent responses in many plant cells. We have identified Ca2+ permeable channels in these cells that may mediate the Ca2+ influx. Funding is requested to characterise these channels and to establish the hierarchy and casual relationships between Ca2+ flux, changes in cytosolic-free [Ca2+], K+ and anion channel activity, and ROS production.
