Abstract

Host-alternating aphids move between different species of summer and winter host plants during the annual cycle. Different adult phenotypes are associated with locating these specific plants but, because of the asexual mode of reproduction, sequential aphid generations are clonal and the phenotypes share a common genotype. Insect behaviour and plant chemistry associated with the selection of summer and winter hosts will be studied using these phenotypic forms with distinct plant preferences. Particular emphasis will be placed upon plant-surface chemistry and the interaction of volatile and non-volatile semiochemicals.
