Abstract
The aim of this proposal is to interpret the effects of soil physical conditions on the dynamics of fungal infection using a combination of microscopical with molecular techniques of quantification, high resolution soil sectioning and mathematical modelling. The principal objectives are: (i) to quantify the effects of soil physical conditions on colony growth and morphology of soilborne fungi, using Rhizoctonia solani as a test organism; (ii) to quantify the effects of soil physical conditions on the pathozone dynamics of R. solani; (iii) to adapt and test nonlinear mathematical models that link soil physical conditions with colony morphology and pathozone dynamics; (iv) to examine consequences of short-scale heterogeneity in soil physical conditions on infection efficiency, biocontrol and scaling-up from individual to population behaviour.
