Abstract

Plant sterol 14-demethylase was recently identified as a member of the cytochrome P45051 (CYP51) family on isolating the full-length cDNA from Sorghum and a shorter fragment of wheat. This is an ancient evolutionary role for the CYP enzymes, the only form found in animals, plants and fungi. cDNAs from Sorghum and wheat would be purified after heterologous expression, characterised for substrate and inhibitor selectivity and subject to investigation of the origin of these characteristics. Expression and localisation of plant CYP51 in different tissues would be investigated.
