Abstract
Abscisic acid (ABA) plays important roles in development and stress-related responses of plants. A number of associated signalling elements are known, but an ABA receptor (ABAR) has yet to be identified. We have isolated a first, putative ABAR gene using expression- cloning strategies. We find that transcript levels are up-regulated in leaves specifically by drought and ABA and pharmacological studies show the ABAR or a closely related protein is required for ABA signalling in guard cells. Funding is requested to characterise (1) the function, and (2) the distribution of the ABAR in planta, and (3) to characterise downstream signalling elements that interact with this protein.
