Abstract

The general importance of plant saponins as preformed resistance factors and of saponin- detoxifying enzymes as fungal pathogenicity factors (already shown for the Gaeumannomyces/oat pathosystem) will be tested by production and pathogenicity testing of saponinase-deficient mutants of two unrelated fungi (Septoria lycopersici/tomato and S. avenae/oat). Inhibitors of the enzymes will be sought by screening phage display libraries of antibody fragments and random peptides, and chemical libraries, and known inhibitors of glycosyl hydrolases. The spectrum of activity of the inhibitors will be studied. Suitable examples will be applied to or introduced into plants and tested for effects of fungal infection; this could give leads to novel disease controls.
