Abstract

The biogenesis of the photosynthetic apparatus in photosynthetic eukaryotes involves a complex genetic circuitry linking the nuclear and chloroplast genomes. We have isolated a nuclear gene (RSF1) of Chlamydomonas that is part of this circuitry and shown that its gene product is required for the expression of the chloroplast gene (petA) encoding the cytochrome f apoprotein. The proposed work will characterise the nuclear factor and investigate its mode of action and role in nuclear-to-chloroplast communication.
