Abstract

Cytokinin is a key regulator of cell division and also mediates a spectrum of other physiological response in plants. Little is known about its mode of action or genes which it regulates. Only one promoter has been isolated which shows a rapid and specific response to cytokinin induction. We have isolated a promoter from the cyclin delta-3 gene, which is rapidly induced by cytokinin within 2-4 hr, and represents the first cytokinin inducible promoter from Arabidopsis. We are generating transgenic plants carrying GUS fusions to this promoter. This project aims to analyse the cytokinin induction of this promoter, to delineate the DNA elements involved and to assess its regulation in plants with altered hormonal status or responses.
