Abstract

The control of chloroplast division will be investigated by molecular and genetic analysis of ARC11 and ARC6 (accumulation and replication of chloroplasts) genes in Arabidopsis and wheat. The ARC11 gene will be isolated from a transposon tagged allele and its pattern of expression determined in relation to chloroplast division by in situ hybridisation analyses using RNA probes. Double mutant combinations will be constructed to investigate epistatic interactions of the ARC genes and mutagenesis used to identify second site suppressors, their interaction(s) and role(s) in the control of chloroplast division. We will also attempt to generate and analyse tagged alleles of arc6.
