Abstract
The major objective is to develop a high resolution CT system capable of non-invasive discrimination of root systems growing in soil. Preliminary calculations show that an X-ray source with the multi-detector array will allow the simultaneous measurement of solid particles and water with a resolution of 0.1 mm. Model root systems and selection of appropriate plant/soil characteristics will be investigated in controlled conditions and two means of discriminating solids and water evaluated.
