Abstract
(1) Induce developmental variation in mycelia using heterogeneous environments, chemical elicitors and heterokaryosis; (2) relate such variation to changes in genetic composition and expression leading to exploitable alterations in extracellular metabolism; (3) relate variation in extracellular metabolism to the permeability of hyphal walls; (4) use the data to provide practical guidelines for management of instability and (5) develop a nonlinear (feedback) model relating mycelial heterogeneity to boundary conditions.
