Abstract

(1) To use chemostat and other discriminative isolation techniques to maximise the recovery of deep sea microorganisms; (2) To evaluate the microbial and genetic diversity at selected deep sea sites, particularly bacteria and archaea, using molecular biological and chemical marker techniques; (3) To embark on an initial series of targeted screens for properties of biotechnological interest.
