Abstract
Details of lipid mobilisation during post-germinative growth and the importance of lipid cycling during plant development are poorly understood. B-oxidation of fatty acid is central to both these processes. Using five different cDNA clones encoding B-oxidation enzymes I aim firstly to establish the developmental regulation of B-oxidation genes and secondly to define the role of B-oxidation throughout the life cycle by production and analysis of antisense plants for two different forms of acyl CoA oxidase. The final aim is to characterise a number of mutant lines that depend on exogenous sucrose for post-germinative growth. It is expected that some of these mutants will be disrupted in genes that are involved in lipid mobilisation. In addition to addressing important biological questions this project will provide an important contribution to applied research of storage lipid modification.
