Abstract

Three new loci, an avirulence gene avrPphE which matches the R2 gene for resistance in bean and two linked hrp genes, hrpY and hrpL have been characterised in P.s pv phaseolicola. Homologues of avrPphE detected in races virulent on bean genotypes carrying R2 and also from P.s pv. tabaci will be sequenced. Expression of avrPphE and linked hrp genes will be studied by transcript analysis and regulation by hrpL or hrpY examined. The AvrPphE protein will be located using FLAG epitope technology. Experiments are also described to test the possible role of avrPphE in pathogenicity and saprophytic ability.
