Abstract
There are significant compositional differences between humic substances (HS) from different substrates and environments. We will use a variety of modern spectroscopy, ultracentrifugation, chemical degradation, pyrolysis mass spectrometry, as well as neutron scattering, and a variety of new procedures to observe compositional variations, and to derive aspects of HS structures. Paired soils, mostly from continuous cultivation and from long term pastures will be used. Compositional, and aspects of structural similarities and differences will be related to interactions between the humic fractions and (soil-type) inorganic colloids, and to interactions with selected anthropogenic chemicals and metals. The information will give a far better awareness of how HS from different origins and environments will react with soil colloids, as well as with inputs to soils, and it will provide (for modellers) much of the detailed information needed to model more accurately interaction processes that are important in the soil.
