Abstract

We aim to examine the mechanisms underlying the changes in photosynthetic metabolism in tobacco infected with Striga gesnerioides, and to test the hypotheses that these effects are mediated via changes in leaf carbohydrates. Specifically we will : (1) Characterise parasite-induced changes in photosynthesis, carbohydrate status and growth. (2) Quantify carbon incorporation into major photosynthetic products. (3) Quantify enzymes of photosynthetic metabolism and their respective mRNA's. (4) Test the effects of altered carbohydrate status on host-parasite performance using transgenic plants.
