Abstract

To identify the defence and aggregation compounds of the two and seven pot ladybirds. Defence activity will be monitored by toxicity tests on a range of invertebrates, and aggregation activity by electrophysiology and behavioural bioassay. High resolution LC and GC will then be used to isolate compounds for characterisation by MS and NMR spectroscopy. The two groups of compounds may be related through common components or biosynthetic pathways. This will be the first study using advanced techniques for investigating biological activity in direct combination with the latest approaches and equipment in chemical structure determination.
