Abstract

This project develops novel research into the molecular biology of esterases in an agriculturally important insect. We will clone the elevated and homologous non-elevated esterases from insecticide resistant and susceptible planthoppers respectively. We will determine whether the mechanism of evaluation is gene amplification, and/or whether qualitative changes have occurred between the esterases. This basic research will ultimately have industrial application, as understanding how esterases and pesticides interact will allow development of novel pesticides as well as producing robust control strategies for resistant insects.
