Abstract

Cytokines are a large group of proteins which both integrate local homeostatic cell interactions and are major mediators of human disease. Cytokines interact with cells in a complex manner which has been defined as 'cytokine networks.' The complexity of these networks is such that cytokine biologists are, increasingly, unable to develop predictive and testable hypotheses to explain the actions and interactions of cytokines. Mathematical modelling is proposed as a way out of this impasse. We aim to build mathematical models, analyse them theoretically, and test them experimentally in in vitro single cell culture in an integrated programme to investigate dynamic, stochastic and spatial characteristics of such networks.
