Abstract

Wavelet analysis will be used to characterise the spatial variability of nitrous oxide emissions from soil. The distribution of the variation between spatial scales will be quantified, and evidence for spatial intermittency of the process at any scale will be evaluated. This latter information will allow suitable sampling schemes for monitoring nitrous oxide emissions to be identified. The scale-dependence of relationships between soil properties and nitrous oxide emissions will be investigated using the wavelet approach. This will allow decoherence at any scales to be identified, and the appropriate explanatory variables to be listed for modelling the process at different levels of spatial aggregation.
