Abstract

This collaborative project with Cerebrus Ltd will characterise the roles of serotonin receptors subtypes in modulating appetite and satiety. It will have three specific objectives: (1) to establish the contribution of 5-HT1B and 5-HT2C receptors, using both selective drugs and transgenic animals, in orchestrating the appetitive and consummatory phases of ingestion. (2) to use c-fos and receptor mapping techniques to identify brain sites that are activated by agents selective for 5HT1B and 5-HT2C receptors. (3) to use central drug administration, neurotoxic lesions and neurochemical recording to establish the brain structures and pathways involved in the actions of serotonin and its receptor subtypes during the normal regulation of feeding.
