Abstract
The marketing of salicylic acid mimics, such as BTH (Ciba) as `crop enhancers' which activate PR gene expression provides an opportunity for development of generic chemical 'switches' for inducible gene expression in field-grown crops. We aim to drive an artificial transcription factor from a tightly-regulated PR promoter (AoPRT- L) and test efficiency and practicalities of driving inducible expression of target reporter genes in crops. The objective is to develop an inducible transcription amplification system for controlled production of industrial levels of valuable pharmaceutical proteins/secondary metabolites in field crops either prior to harvest, or post harvest, under approved production conditions, as required by manufacturers.
