Abstract
Our ability to study cell structure and function is being revolutionised by innovations in fluorescent tagging of proteins and hence structures in living cells. The parallel development of image analysis software, electronic camera technologies and novel microscope illumination designs is presenting molecular cell biologists with unprecedented opportunities to study the dynamics of fundamental biological processes. For the first time it is possible to visualise multiple proteins or structures within living cells and record their actions in real time. This application requests funds for a Delta Vision microscope imaging platform that is specifically designed to bring together these innovations. This equipment will facilitate a multi-disciplinary approach from groups studying diverse problems such as mitosis, cell division, cell/cell and cell surface recognition, protein assemblies and intracellular compartmentalisation, protein and organelle trafficking. The equipment will support the research of a large and highly active local scientific community and will provide access for industry and the national academic community to a novel form of light microscopy.
