Abstract

The explosive progress made in cell biology over the last ten years has been driven by our increased knowledge of the information encoded in the genome of a diverse number of organisms. With this information available as a resource, further progress involves finding the function of individual genes and the significance of their spatial and temporal patterns of expression. The comparative study of genomic information has provided a new and powerful tool for ecologists to study the evolution and interaction of species at a direct level. In many ways these studies represent two ends of the spectrum of genome analysis: from the sequence which specifies a protein to genome comparisons which define closely related yet distinct species evolved from a common ancestor. For the first time researchers in these diverse areas share a common interest in one unifying resource which may also forge a link between their disciplines. Research in the School of Biological Sciences at Southampton encompasses the full range of genome studies within the research divisions of Cell Sciences and Biodiversity. The proposal here is to provide a dedicated DNA sequencing and analysis facility to augment the work of molecular ecologists and cell biologists within the School. A common facility would foster collaborations between the two divisions and with other University Departments and supporting industrial partnerships.
