Abstract

The equipment is required for two main research projects underpinning IP developed in part with BBSRC funds and protected by granted patents and pending applications. The work has been highlighted by BBSRC for its commercial potential. Part of the equipment underpins a 5 year field trial programme of transgenic potato plants resistant to potato cyst-nematode with the aim of replacing environmentally unacceptable nematicides used widely in the UK crop. Principal objectives will to be evaluate root-specific promoters and to select effector proteins alone and in combination for a high level of efficacy. Plants from which the selectable marker has been removed will also be trialled. The second need is for a containment glasshouses for testing nematode resistant bananas in collaboration with a major UK plant biotechnology company. This work will develop constructs and lines for field trial. Award will also support a very strong research programme with several biotechnology companies and funding from a wide range of UK and international funding sources. Award of the equipment will make a long-term contribution to the infrastructure of the Centre of Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology. This is a large and very strong plant molecular biology grouping with important basic and strategic research interests.
