Abstract
This proposal requests infrastructure support to purchase a LI-COR DNA sequencing system for expansion of four key areas of basic and applied biological research at Aberystwyth. An 'in-house' automated DNA sequencing service will also underpin overall molecular research in West and Mid Wales, already strengthened by the formation of the multi-institution based Aberystwyth Bio Centre (ABC). The system requested is competitively priced and recognised as one of the leaders in its field. It accelerates data acquisition via highly accurate long reads with enhanced sensitivity and is ideal for our current and predicted future needs for established sequencing protocols and our development of new sequencing based technologies e.g. sequencing cDNA inserts, primary genomic clones, ESTs PCR products, PCR-based mapping and developing techniques for fluorescent PCR RFLP profiling. IBS will dedicate a technician to co-ordinate: group allocation, consumable budgets, maintain system, and train deputies. The groups driving this proposal all have substantial current research council funding and international reputations in their respective biological disciplines: Plant Molecular Pathology (group leader, Prof. Draper), Microbial Biotechnology (Prof. Kell), Microbial Molecular Genetics (Prof. Young) and Molecular Parasitology (Prof. Barrett). The application is lead by Dr Brophy, a molecular biologist, who will have overall responsibility for the DNA sequencing laboratory management.
