Abstract

The research of many staff in the Institute of Biology, largely funded by the BBSRC, has become increasingly dependent on transgenic plant technology to address basic and applied problems in plant physiology, pathology and biochemistry. A large proportion of the projects are carried out in collaboration with industry. The recent appointment of three new staff in this area involved in molecular pathology and the planned recruitment of further staff using molecular genetic technology has put enormous strain on existing rudimentary containment facilities in the Institute and there is an urgent need to develop a central containment laboratory to house the ongoing expansion and planned future work with transgenic plants and their pathogens. The research using the proposed equipment is carried out currently by 9 academic staff (and their research teams) and is largely concerned with the evaluation of defensive signalling pathways in plants under attack by pathogens. There is a particular focus on trying to understand the role of salicylic acid and active oxygen species in plant defence and in the development of theories relating to the molecular mechanism of the hypersensitive response with the ultimate aim of developing novel strategies for crop protection in the future.
