Abstract

This first round JIF award provides state-of-the-art facilities for 15 academic staff and over 90 research staff in the Centre for Plant Sciences (CPS). The award underpins all three CPS research themes of: 1) transgenic crop resistance; 2) signal transduction and gene expression by plants; and 3) the manipulation of crop architecture. The new infrastructure supports a continuum in plant molecular biology from basic science through plant transformation to containment and field evaluation. The benefits can be summarised in three components. The first is replacement and augmentation of communal equipment. The second is increased capacity for crop transformation, regeneration and growth which involves construction of a tissue culture suite with contiguous controlled environment rooms and containment glasshouses. A third minor component of the award provides equipment for field trials. The award ensures that the capacity of the facilities will support our increased activity including that of five more recent academic appointments. The JIF award will enable CPS to maintain and enhance its international standing in plant molecular biology research.(Funded by the Wellcome Trust, OST and HEFCE Joint Infrastructure Fund and administered by BBSRC)
