Abstract

This proposal is to study the mechanisms that regulate the subcellular localisation of class II histone deacetylases HDAC4 and HDAC5, and transcription mediated by MEF-2 proteins in response to electrical activity in hippocampal neurons. Since MEF2 family members are implicated in activity-dependent neuronal survival the research programme will investigate whether MEF2-mediated gene expression is compromised by stimuli such as excitotoxic insults that cause cell death and the mechanisms involved.
