Abstract
The overall objective is to investigate the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) infection on plant N and P capture from organic patches. Specifically to: a) examine if AM infection enhances patch exploitation b) test if root proliferation and turnover is modified by (i) AM infection (ii) type of AM infection c) follow and manipulate C flux into the rhizosphere and mycorrhizosphere in the presence of an organic patch d) monitor C substrate utilisation profiles of rhizosphere micro-organisms in decomposing patches. The main targets are as follows: Non-mycorrhizal and mycorrhizal infected plants competition series with C substrate profiling of rhizosphere micro-organisms (completed month 12), Differing C:N patch addition studies (completed month 24 leading to selection of material for future experiments), carbon flux studies and manipulations (completed month 33), familiarisation with molecular techniques (month 25-28) and application in AM competition series (months 29+).
