Abstract

The objectives of the proposed research programme are: 1) To develop an integrated understanding of the impact of maternal behaviour on lifelong responsive stressors; 2) To evaluate the role of low quality or curtailed maternal care in the welfare of laboratory rodents; 3) To evaluate the generality of such effects to other species, particularly agricultural animals. Targets to be met include: 1) To test hypotheses derived form 'Early handling' rodent studies and 'Attachment theory' primate studies in an integrated manner to identify key aspects of maternal behaviour and how they affect their offsprings' responses to challenges; 2) To investigate the influence of maternal behaviour on lifelong tendency to develop stereotypies; 3) To use rodent species with different forms of parental care to investigate the generality of such effects.
