Abstract
The objectives of this proposed research programme are to: 1) Develop isogenic lines of Senecio squalidus homozygous for self-incompatibility (S).alleles. 2) Investigate basic aspects of the physiology of sporophytic self-incompatibility (SSI) in S. squalidus. 3) Characterise genes at the S-locus of S. squalidus and determine the function of the proteins that they encode. 4) Develop S-allele-specific probes to investigate the frequency and evolutionary history of S-alleles in the UK population of S. squalidus.
