Abstract

The primary aim of the proposal is to upgrade and increase fluorescence imaging facilities for the use of research groups within the School of Biological Sciences, University of East Anglia (BIO) and Institute of Food Research, Norwich (IFRN). Such a facility will greatly increase the scope of a number of cell physiological and cell biological projects, as outlined below. All of the projects involve imaging of intracellular ion species in relation to both cell signalling and nutrient transport. There is an increasing need for versatile fluorescence imaging systems in a department that is rapidly expanding in terms of researchers and disciplines. The existing facility is nearly 10 years old and its rate of data acquisition and data storage is limited. An upgrade will not only lead to the provision of a state-of-the-art imaging system, but will also provide a photometer-based system, thereby increasing both the specification and number of fluorescence analysis systems within The School.
